The Legend of Dombe Rani – The Beauty Who Enchanted the Merman

The Garo Hills in Meghalaya are home to countless mythological tales and folklore, passed down through generations of the A’chik tribe. Among these, one of the most captivating stories is that of Dombe Rani, a woman whose extraordinary beauty mesmerized even a mystical merman. This legend originates from the village of Emangre, which is famous for its connection to Dombe Wari, or Dombe Lake.

The Mystical Tale of Dombe Wari

According to Garo mythology, mystical beings, including mermen, were believed to reside in the deep waters of Dombe Wari. These water spirits were known to occasionally visit human settlements, observing the lives of mortals.

One day, whispers of Dombe Rani’s beauty reached the ears of the mermen. It was said that her radiance was unmatched, and her face was as mesmerizing as the moonlit night. But Dombe Rani was already married to a man named Joreng, who adored her dearly. He felt immense pride in having such a beautiful wife, unaware that this very pride would soon bring him sorrow.

The Merman’s Enchantment – A Love Beyond Worlds

Determined to see Dombe Rani for himself, a merman disguised as a human arrived in the village. To blend in, he posed as a merchant selling samgong (traditional bangles). As he wandered through the village, he finally caught sight of Dombe Rani—and in that moment, he was spellbound by her breathtaking charm.

Overcome with desire and fascination, the merman offered her a special bangle, one infused with supernatural power. Unaware of its magic, Dombe Rani slipped the bangle onto her wrist—only to realize, to her horror, that it could not be removed. She pulled and twisted it, but it stayed firmly in place.

Seeing her distress, the merman smiled mysteriously and whispered,
“Keep it, for I shall return for you soon.”

The Legend Lives On

Even today, Dombe Wari remains a mysterious place, shrouded in the echoes of this ancient tale. Locals believe that on quiet nights, the lake still holds secrets of the past, whispering stories of a forbidden love between a mortal and a mystical being.

This legend of Dombe Rani and the Merman continues to be one of the most fascinating folktales of the Garo Hills, drawing curiosity from travelers, folklore enthusiasts, and storytellers alike.
